What is Eid Ul Adha?
Eid ul Adha also known as Eid al-Adha or the Festival of Sacrifice is a significant religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It is considered one of the two major holidays in Islam the other being Eid al-Fitr.
Eid ul Adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of submission to God's command. According to Islamic tradition just as Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son God provided a ram as a substitute symbolizing the importance of faith and obedience.
The holiday is observed on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul Hijjah following the completion of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. It lasts for four days and is a time of joy prayer feasting and sharing with family friends and the less fortunate.
One of the main rituals of Eid ul Adha is the sacrifice of an animal usually a sheep goat cow or camel which represents the sacrificing of worldly desires and material possessions.
